Which decisions meet at an opening?

Select the actual door or window and its operation before finalizing the opening detail. Clear passage, the product frame and the required rough opening are different measurements.

A Planning Reference can help establish the footprint and intended use. It cannot specify structural members, fastening, support layout, load assumptions, or permit compliance for your site.

Where does access work?

Place doors around equipment approach, yard access, clearance, and the floor plan. Confirm the final product dimensions and threshold requirements before construction.

What should daylight do?

Use windows to support the intended layout and ventilation plan without blocking storage, work surfaces, privacy needs, or practical wall use.

What is the exterior exposed to?

Compare siding and trim products against local rain, sun, wind, splashback, maintenance expectations, and manufacturer installation requirements.

How will the interior be used?

Storage, a workshop, and occasional occupied use create different ventilation, lining, finish, and safety questions that should be resolved before product selection.

Confirm nominal sizes, required rough openings, hardware, flashing, operation clearance, and manufacturer instructions for the selected products.

Confirm the complete exterior system, including product compatibility, flashing, transitions, drainage plane, and required clearances for the local exposure.

Confirm all wall structural design, opening support, wind requirements, anchoring, and connections with an appropriate local source.

Confirm whether occupancy, electrical work, egress, fire separation, property lines, or local code affect the final wall and opening plan.
