Planning a shed office, studio, retreat or gym

Start with the activity and the time you will spend inside. Furniture, movement, comfort and services all need to fit the same proposal; a finished-looking room image cannot settle those conditions.

Published · Planning questions and source notes below

Describe a normal session

For an office, describe sitting, standing, opening storage and leaving the chair. For a studio, include the materials and unfinished work. For a retreat, consider how a chair, table or hobby surface is actually used. For a gym, record the full movement of the activity rather than only the equipment at rest.

Write down who uses the space and what is simultaneous. A folding desk and exercise mat may share a room at different times, while two people using both at once is a different brief.

Check the actual building

Obtain usable interior dimensions, door operation and relevant clear heights. Record the source for each number. The outside size on a product label does not establish the clear room you can furnish.

Keep services and intended occupancy as explicit questions for the supplier and applicable local guidance. A storage-shed specification is not evidence that a proposed office, gym or dwelling conversion is approved.

Make comfort a set of questions

Describe daylight, screen glare, privacy, lighting and the periods when the room will be used. Ask how ventilation, heating or cooling and any lining will work with the chosen assembly. Give the same brief to each supplier so the proposals can be compared.

For exercise or equipment use, record the relevant floor and overhead questions without inventing a generic capacity. For music or messy work, add sound, dust and cleaning needs to the brief rather than treating them as decoration decisions.

Use reference images precisely

Save a few images and annotate the specific feature you want from each: the desk position, a view out, a clear floor or the materials. Avoid treating several unrelated pictures as a single coherent design.

Leave with a one-page list of activities, actual dimensions, furniture in use, service questions and the source of each confirmed answer. The existing office, retreat and gym planning references can help organize the spatial questions; they do not replace product or local verification.

Keep these questions with your project.
